Flying around Wanaka - (Lat 44 41.69138 S - Long 169 08.09101 E )

What to expect
Flying around Wanaka is extremely scenic, with thermic mountain conditions. It is not always as easy as some pilots imagine. The variety of different sites, terrains and conditions prove a fine test of all level of skills.
An average January will see about half of the days suitable for extensive XC flying. Most sites are accessible by 2wd and 4wd vehicles. During the competition we will be relying on shared lifts and retrieves and on the good will of other pilots and local landowners.
There are a host of different sites to fly from and we will endeavour to vary them as much as conditions allow. However, with the good access, large take off areas and great conditions at Treble Cone ski area, it is likely that this will be the primary site for competitions.
Sites
With the exception of Mt Iron, most other sites have complex issues and permissions associated with landowners and operators. This is a dynamic situation so it is impossible to create a specific guide to any local sites or rules. For this reason please always call a local pilot for current information before trying to access a site and please attend all briefings. Waiorau and Breast Hill sites have a road toll which is not included in the entry fee. The Wanaka Yacht Club venue (briefings) is situated by the marina approx. 1 kilometer West from the town centre on the NW edge of the Wanaka waterfront.
Accommodation
Camping – Private landowners
Ruth Lyons, Kat & Bryan and Jan Divers all off Hawea Flat (15 minutes from Wanaka) have offered limited space for camping. Please contact us for details. There are other camping grounds with vary levels of services. A highly recommended campsite is the Albert Town Camp (un-serviced) next to the Clutha River. For a beautiful serviced campsite try the Outlet Motor Camp or the Glendhu Bay Motor Camp. See the Lake Wanaka w.w.w. site below.
As Wanaka is a prime tourist destination and the event is held in the main summer holiday period we recommend booking early for any serviced accommodation. All forms and levels of tourist accommodation are available.
